46th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan

Today, marks the 46th anniversary of the former Soviet Union’s military attack on the country.

On 6 July 1979, the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan with about 25,000 troops simultaneously from the ground and air, assassinated then-President Hafizullah Amin and put Babak Karmal in power.

This attack met with fierce resistance from the Afghan Mujahideen, and the Soviets were forced to increase their forces to more than 100,000 in a short period of time.

The Afghan people’s jihad against the Soviet occupiers continued for nearly a decade, and during this time, the Soviet forces’ brutal bombings and attacks resulted in the martyrdom, injury, and disability of more than 1.5 million Afghans, and millions more sought refuge in neighboring countries.

The stubborn resistance and nationwide jihad of the Afghan people defeated the Soviet Union and the occupying forces left Afghanistan on 26 December 1988.

This humiliating departure is considered one of the main factors in the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War.
