A number of Afghan migrants die due to extreme cold on the Iranian border

Iranian media reported, quoting the commander of the country’s border forces in Khorasan Razavi Province, that a number of Afghan citizens who were trying to illegally cross the common border have died due to severe cold.

The Iranian official did not announce the exact number of dead, but said that their bodies were handed over to the authorities of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan through the Dogharun border.

He also added that Iranian border forces have saved a number of other Afghan migrants from death due to the cold.

Earlier, local officials in Herat told the media that three people had died due to extreme cold on the Afghan-Iranian border.

This incident occurs as the winter season approaches and the cold weather intensifies, increasing the risk of illegal crossing of mountainous borders for migrants
