UNAMA on International Human Rights Day: Islamic Emirate should lift restrictions on women

Today, Tuesday (10) December (2025), is International Human Rights Day; the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly in Paris adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, introducing it as a fundamental document for the protection of the dignity and rights of all human beings throughout the world.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) issued a statement on the occasion of this day, stating that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan must adhere to its international obligations in the field of human rights, and in particular, remove the severe restrictions imposed on the education, work, and social presence of girls and women.

UNAMA stressed that the systematic deprivation of half of Afghan society from basic rights is in direct conflict with the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and called on the Afghan government to take practical steps to bring it closer to international standards.
