The UN General Assembly has extended the mandate of UNRWA for another three years

The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly approved the extension of the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) for another three years to continue global support for millions of Palestinian refugees in various regions of the Middle East.

This decision was made at a meeting attended by representatives of 193 UN member states and was approved with 161 votes in favor, 7 against, and 11 abstentions.

Israel, the United States, Canada, Hungary, Argentina, and Paraguay were among the opponents of the plan.

The extension of UNRWA’s mission, which began operating in 1949, comes at a time when the organization is facing financial and political challenges.

This extension followed a temporary US funding cut in January 2025 and political pressure to restructure the organization.
