Saudi Arabia pledges $1 million to boost agriculture and food security in Afghanistan
The Afghanistan Humanitarian Assistance Trust Fund (AHTF) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) signed an agreement to receive $1 million in development assistance from the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD).
This assistance is provided through the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and will be implemented by the International Committee of the Red Cross in cooperation with the Afghan Red Crescent Society.
The project focuses on empowering smallholder farmers, improving agricultural production methods, rehabilitating irrigation infrastructure, and creating job opportunities through a cash-for-work program.
According to the Red Cross, more than
– 10,000 people will benefit from this program.
– 761 farmer families receive financial assistance
63 farmers will receive specialized training
– 500 people will be involved in sustainable cash-for-work projects.
“Empowering local farmers will not only strengthen immediate food, but also increase the long-term stability and resilience of communities,” said Katrina Ritz, head of the Red Cross in Afghanistan.
