Trump gave Maduro an ultimatum: step down or face US military attack
The Wall Street Journal reported, citing informed sources, that Donald Trump warned Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a direct phone call late last week that the United States would take military action against Caracas if he did not step down.
According to the newspaper, in this short and sharp conversation, Trump told Maduro, “Either you voluntarily leave power or you will face a US military attack.”
In Caracas’ immediate reaction, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry issued a strongly worded statement hours after the news was released, calling Trump’s threat “unilateral hostility and completely contrary to the principles of international law” and emphasizing: “No foreign power has the right to interfere in internal affairs or threaten the national sovereignty, territorial integrity, or airspace of Venezuela.”
Venezuela categorically rejects any threat or intervention from the United States or any other country.
