Death toll from floods and landslides in Indonesia’s Sumatra rises to 303

At least 303 people have died and dozens are still missing after heavy monsoon rains and landslides hit the island of Sumatra, Indonesian officials said, Reuters reported.

This natural disaster, which began a week ago, has covered large parts of western Sumatra island, destroyed thousands of homes and displaced more than 80,000 people.

At the same time, torrential rains caused by the tropical storm have also flooded southern Thailand and parts of Malaysia, causing dozens of deaths and extensive damage to infrastructure.

The Indonesian government has declared a state of emergency and rescue workers are using helicopters to transport the injured and deliver food to hard-to-reach areas.
