The Hayli Gabbi volcano in the Afar region of northeastern Ethiopia erupted for the first time in about 10,000 years on Sunday, November 23, 2025.

The Toulouse Volcanic Alert Center (VAAC) said the eruption began at around 8:30 a.m. UTC and was accompanied by powerful explosions. The ash cloud shot up to 45,000 feet (about 13.7 kilometers) into the sky and was moving eastward toward the Red Sea, Yemen and Oman.

The eruption also released significant amounts of sulfur dioxide (SO2).

Hailey Volcano, Gobi is a shield volcano located in the southernmost part of the Erta Ale mountain range and in the Danakil active zone, which is considered one of the most remote and harsh places on Earth.
