Trump-Xi direct talks in Busan a step towards easing trade tensions

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held face-to-face talks on Thursday, October 30, 2025, on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Busan for the first time in more than six years.

The meeting focused on reducing trade tensions, tariffs, and geopolitical issues.

Trump called the negotiations amazing and said: “We made great decisions.”

Xi Jinping also emphasized that negotiators from the two countries have reached a basic agreement on key concerns.

The meeting was held at Gimhae Air Base and was attended by Marco Rubio, Howard Latnick, and Wang Yi.

Hopes have risen for the lifting of Trump’s additional 100% tariffs on Chinese goods.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant announced that these tariffs are off the negotiating table.

In addition to the smuggling trade, Taiwan’s fentanyl and China’s role in Ukraine peace were also discussed.
