The United States has extended the sanctions waiver for Chabahar Port until early 2026, a move that Indian officials say is of great strategic importance for New Delhi’s regional connectivity plans and paves the way for expanding economic ties with Afghanistan, Central Asia and Russia.
According to the Economic Times, this extension came after intensive negotiations between India and the United States and emphasizes the need for continued operations of Chabahar Port for the success of regional connectivity programs and the delivery of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.
Chabahar Port, operated under a 10-year contract between India and Iran, plays a key role in transit exports and economic cooperation between the two countries.
India has recently sent several shipments of ambulances and medical equipment to Afghanistan through the port.
The Islamic Emirate has also expressed interest in using Chabahar to expand its foreign trade.
