Kandahar pomegranate exports to Russia begin via Turghandi port; an alternative to closed Pakistani routes

Following the closure of trade routes between Afghanistan and Pakistan, a private company called Canada Fruit has started exporting Kandahar pomegranates to the Russian market for the first time through the Turghandi port in Herat.

According to officials from the Kandahar Chamber of Commerce and Investment, in the first phase, 22 tons of pomegranates worth 24,000 US dollars will be exported, and efforts are underway to increase the volume of Afghan fresh fruit exports to global markets by opening alternative routes.

While more than 270,000 tons of pomegranates will be harvested from Kandahar orchards this year, the closure of Pakistani borders has created concerns for farmers, but this initiative could be a new opportunity
