85% of the city of Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip has been destroyed

The mayor of the city of Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip reported in a new report after the ceasefire was announced that there was widespread destruction of urban infrastructure, stating that 85% of the city had been completely destroyed.

According to local authorities, more than 400,000 tons of debris need to be removed from the city’s streets, while 300 kilometers of water supply networks have been destroyed and 75 percent of the city’s sewage system is out of service.

Also, more than 350,000 tons of waste requires urgent management.

The mayor of Gaza stressed that nine work teams are opening the roads, but diesel fuel is urgently needed to complete this operation.

He also called for modern machinery for debris removal and power generators to replace worn-out and destroyed equipment.

The report comes as the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has raised hopes for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, but the residents of Khan Younis face enormous humanitarian and logistical challenges
