Guterres welcomes Gaza ceasefire agreement as a step towards ending occupation and realizing two-state solution
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the first-phase ceasefire agreement between Hamas and the Israeli regime, which includes the release of prisoners based on the plan proposed by Donald Trump.
He called on the parties to fully adhere to the agreement and emphasized that the war must end forever.
Guterres called for immediate and unhindered guarantees for the delivery of humanitarian aid and essential commercial goods to Gaza.
He also called on the parties to use this opportunity to create a credible path towards ending the occupation, recognizing the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, and realizing a two-state solution to provide a peaceful and secure life for Palestinians and Israelis.
The UN Secretary-General appreciated the efforts of the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Türkiye in reaching this agreement, adding: “The situation has never been so sensitive.”
The agreement, which will be signed today at 12:00 noon Cairo time, is considered a turning point in the 15-month Gaza crisis.
