Germany summons Russian ambassador over Polish airspace violation

The German Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador to Berlin on Thursday (September 11)

The move was in response to the violation of Polish airspace by Russian drones during nighttime attacks on Ukraine.

According to German officials, the incident was described as a deliberate and targeted provocation and is a sign of increasing tensions between Russia and NATO.

The incident, which occurred on September 9, 2025 at around 11:30 p.m. local time, involved the entry of at least 19 Russian suicide drones into Polish airspace.

Polish and NATO air forces shot down at least eight drones, and NATO fighter jets scrambled to counter them.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called the move a “massive provocation” and called an emergency government meeting.

The summons is part of a coordinated European response; the Netherlands, Spain, the Czech Republic and Italy have also summoned Russian diplomats.

The United Nations Security Council is also scheduled to hold an emergency meeting on Friday.
