Lebanese cabinet approves Hezbollah disarmament plan, details remain confidential

The Lebanese cabinet, in a meeting chaired by President Joseph Aoun, approved the army’s plan to monopolize weapons in the hands of the government on Friday.

This plan, which is interpreted as disarming Hezbollah, was accompanied by sidelines, and five Shiite ministers affiliated with Hezbollah, the Amal Movement, and Fadi Makki left the meeting in protest at the presentation of this plan by Army Commander Rudolf Heikal.

Lebanese Information Minister Paul Marqes announced in a press conference after the meeting that the cabinet welcomed the army’s plan and that the army is obligated to begin implementing it based on its material and human logistical capabilities.

He added that the content of the plan and the negotiations surrounding it will remain confidential, and the military will provide monthly reports on its progress.

Referring to the American “plan” for the disarmament of armed groups, Morqes emphasized that progress in implementing this plan depends on Israel’s commitment, which has not taken any practical steps so far.
