The discovery of the ancient hill of Mendik Tepe in Türkiye is a new step in rewriting the history of human civilization

Archaeologists in the Ayyubid district of Şanlıurfa province, Turkey, have discovered an ancient site called “Mendek Tepe” that may be older than Göbekli Tepe, the world’s oldest known ritual center.

The discovery, reported by Anadolu Agency on Thursday , could transform our understanding of the beginning of human civilization.

A team of archaeologists led by Professor Douglas Baird from the University of Liverpool, in collaboration with the Şanlıurfa Archaeological Museum and the British Archaeological Institute, have begun excavating the mound.

“Last year’s excavations revealed several structures of various sizes, including a large building with impressive stones that may have had a ritual use,” Professor Baird told Anadolu Agency.

Initial studies indicate that Mendik Tepe may belong to the early Neolithic period, preceding the periods associated with Göbekli Tepe and Karahan Tepe.
