The arrest of Lahore Sheikh Jangi in Sulaymaniyah and the end of bloody clashes
Lahore Sheikh Jangi, the head of the Popular Front Party and an influential figure in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, was arrested on Friday morning (22th of August) along with his two brothers Pulad and Aras Sheikh Jangi after fierce clashes around the Lalehzar Hotel in the city of Sulaymaniyah.
The operation was carried out following the issuance of an arrest warrant by the Sulaymaniyah Security Investigation Court on charges of causing chaos, public order and security issues, and terrorist acts.
According to Kurdish news sources and local networks such as Rudaw and Al-Ahd, police security forces, anti-terrorism departments, and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan security forces attacked the Lalehzar Hotel, where Sheikh Jangi resides, in a joint operation.
This action was accompanied by armed resistance after Sheikh Jangi refused to surrender and declared that he considered the arrest warrant illegal and political.
Images published by the Rudaw network show the moment Sheikh Jangi was arrested, leaving the hotel amid tight security measures.
Al-Ahd TV reported that two people were killed and six were injured in these clashes.
