Tunisia’s Ennahda leader Rachid Ghannouchi goes on hunger strike in prison
Rachid Ghannouchi, leader of Tunisia’s Islamist Ennahda movement, has gone on a hunger strike in solidarity with the people of Gaza who are suffering from hunger and a genocidal war.
This action is taking place while Al-Ghannoushi is in prison.
A court in Tunisia has sentenced Ghannouchi to 22 years in prison, his son to 35 years, his daughter to 25 years, and his son-in-law to 15 years.
They are accused of undermining national security.
This is despite the fact that the Ennahda Party and other opposition parties have repeatedly denied the allegations and claim that these sentences were issued because of their political positions and freedom of expression.
It is worth noting that on 2022, Tunisian President Kais Saied issued a decree dismissing the government of Hisham al-Mashichi, suspending the activities of the parliament headed by Ghannouchi, and amending the constitution to make changes to the country’s political structure.
The Ennahda movement has called these actions a coup and called for the immediate release of Ghannouchi and other political prisoners.
