The US Senate voted 86-11 to approve a bill to tighten sanctions against Russia, a measure aimed at reducing Moscow’s revenues from energy exports and increasing pressure on the country to end the war in Ukraine.
Under this plan, the US president could impose tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil, gas and other products. China and India are among the largest buyers of Russian energy that may be affected by this measure.
The package also includes sanctions against Vladimir Putin, senior political and military officials, financial institutions and Russian energy projects, and targets oil tankers used to circumvent sanctions.
Donald Trump can lift some of the restrictions on this plan if Congress approves it in the national interest.
