Trump’s new trade deal with India in exchange for New Delhi cutting off Russian oil purchases

US President Donald Trump, in a coordinated move with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, announced that India would stop buying oil from Russia and, in return, would sign a new trade deal with the United States with a significant reduction in tariffs.

This agreement is considered part of Washington’s efforts to attract India to the Western bloc and weaken the strategic cooperation between Moscow and New Delhi.

Al Jazeera reported that Trump has agreed to reduce tariffs on goods imported from India from 50% to 18%.

Trump made the remarks after a phone call with Modi, adding that in return for the tariff reduction, India would stop buying oil from Russia and instead source its oil needs from the United States and possibly Venezuela
