Trump: Countries opposing US plan for Greenland will face tariffs
US President Donald Trump recently stated that the United States desperately needs Greenland to ensure its national security, and that lack of access to the island could create a major security vacuum.
Trump warned that countries that do not agree to the US plan for Greenland could face heavy tariffs from Washington.
He added that the United States is in talks with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on this matter, and emphasized that Greenland is strategically vital to the national security of the United States and its allies.
These statements come at a time when Trump has repeatedly proposed purchasing or annexing Greenland, emphasizing the island’s geographical location and natural resources as part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The Danish government has so far rejected any discussion of changing Greenland’s sovereignty.
