United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has arrived in Pakistan for a three-day visit and is scheduled to meet with a number of high-ranking officials.
According to the state-run Pakistan News Agency, Guterres will meet with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, President Asif Ali Zardari, and a number of other Pakistani officials in Islamabad.
Discussions about Pakistan’s role in diplomatic efforts to mediate in the conflict between the United States and Iran and support for negotiations between the two sides are among the main focuses of this trip.
Guterres will also visit Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority to learn about the country’s efforts to prepare for and respond to natural disasters following the widespread floods of 2022.
During the trip, the UN Secretary-General will also visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan, which monitors the Line of Control in disputed Kashmir, and Guterres is scheduled to return to New York on Thursday.
