Today Student protests in France turn violent, thousands arrested

Student protests in France, which initially began in the suburbs of Paris, have spread to more than a thousand schools across the country and have led to clashes between protesters and security forces in some areas.

Reuters reported that around 5,000 people, mostly teenagers, have been arrested since the protests began last week. The Paris police chief has described the situation as “out of control.”

Protesters are protesting the dilapidated school buildings, the shortage of teachers, overcrowded classrooms, and inadequate educational conditions; during the unrest, a number of schools were damaged and clashes were reported in various cities, including Paris, Lyon, and Marseille.

French authorities have reported that hundreds of police officers have been injured; according to published reports, 305 police officers have been injured during the protests.
