Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of the Russian Federation’s National Security Council, has warned Western countries that Moscow may use nuclear weapons if faced with a serious threat to its national security.
In an interview with the newspaper Vedomosti, Medvedev said that Russia’s nuclear doctrine allows the use of these weapons under certain conditions, and the amendments made have clarified the conditions for the use of nuclear weapons.
The former Russian president added that the list of military threats covered by nuclear deterrence measures has also expanded, stressing that this is “not a scare tactic, but a reality.”
Medvedev has also said that Russia wants a quick end to the war in Ukraine, but that it must end on Moscow’s terms, otherwise, he said, there is a risk of the conflict rekindling and turning into a global war.
