The Government of Qatar has once again emphasized its commitment to playing an active role as an international partner in Afghanistan through mediation and hosting dialogues and meetings related to Afghanistan.
Abdullah bin Ali Behzad, the second secretary of the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the UN office in Geneva, said at an interactive session of the UN Human Rights Council that Qatar is trying to help build international consensus and provide the ground for dialogue and coordination on Afghanistan.
He emphasized that Afghanistan continues to face one of the largest and most complex humanitarian crises in the world, and nearly 22 million people, equivalent to about 45 percent of the country’s population, are in need of humanitarian assistance.
According to him, insecurity, economic fragility, climate change, displacement, reduced aid, the return of millions of refugees, sanctions, and the freezing of government assets have made the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan more difficult. More than 4.7 million people, including about 3.7 million children, are facing the risk of severe food insecurity.
The Qatari representative considered education, especially the education of children and girls, one of the country’s priorities, and said that the Qatar Fund for Development and the Education Above All Foundation have supported the education of 30,000 out-of-school students since 2023.
He added that the Qatar Red Crescent Society has been supporting education in remote areas of Afghanistan since 2016, and the Qatar Charity Society, with financial support from the Qatar Fund for Development, is implementing a project to build and equip a specialized hospital for women, children, and the internal affairs department.
