Kirill Dmitriev, special envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, made a sarcastic and critical suggestion in a post on X that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Kaia Kallas (EU foreign policy chief) should take responsibility for controlling the Strait of Hormuz.
“Perhaps Ursula von der Leyen and Kaia Kallas, the relentless and fearless leaders of the European Union, should be in charge of controlling the Strait of Hormuz; this would certainly calm the markets and prevent the worst energy crisis in the European Union,” he wrote.
Referring to Ursula von der Leyen’s quarantine and censorship policies during the Covid-19 pandemic, Dmitriev quipped that the same methods could be used to quarantine and censor energy in the current crisis.
He emphasized, “Ursula organized the quarantines and censorship related to Covid. Now Ursula, with the experience of quarantines and censorship.
These statements come as tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have reached a peak and the European Union is on the verge of a severe energy crisis. Dmitriev’s remarks have been interpreted as a sharp criticism of European policies and indirect support for Iran’s position in controlling the Strait.
