The Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials, that the United States is preparing to withdraw approximately 1,000 of its troops from remaining positions in Syria.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stressed that US forces would withdraw from Syria within the next two months, marking the end of the US military presence in the country after years.
The Wall Street Journal added that the withdrawal of troops from Syria has nothing to do with redeploying forces in the region against Iran, but rather that the Trump administration has concluded that the continued military presence in Syria is no longer necessary.
This decision comes at a time when the United States has deployed about 1,000 troops in eastern Syria since 2014, mainly in the provinces of Hasakah and Deir Ezzor, to combat ISIS and support the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)
