Türkiye’s EU membership talks remain suspended

The analytical news website Politico reported, citing informed sources, that the European Union has no plans to resume Turkey’s membership negotiations in the union, and that Ankara’s accession process to the union remains at a complete standstill.

“Europe needs to take a fresh look at its relations with Turkey,” EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kass, who will arrive in Turkey on Friday, February 17, 2021, told Politico, adding that her visit to Ankara is solely dedicated to rebuilding mutual trust and exploring ways to improve bilateral economic ties.

Politico stressed that the EU is currently seeking to revive relations with Turkey as a vital partner, especially in the context of the Ukraine crisis, where Ankara is likely to play a key role after the war ends.
