Axios’ 180-degree turnaround after Araqchi’s tweet: Iran-US talks resume in Muscat

The Axios website, which had previously claimed that the US opposed the relocation of the talks from Turkey to Oman and that the talks had been canceled, has now made a complete 180-degree turn in a new report and announced that the Iran-US meeting in Muscat has been rescheduled.

Axios quoted a senior American official as saying that the talks in Oman will focus solely on Iran’s nuclear program because Iran has refused to negotiate over its missile program.

The change in Axios’ position came after Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi tweeted that nuclear talks would be held in Muscat around 10 a.m. Friday and thanked Oman for the arrangements. These comments apparently prompted a correction to Axios’ previous report.

Sources close to the negotiations emphasize that the United States insists that non-nuclear issues, especially Iran’s missile program, be included in any agreement, but Iran has maintained its position and is focusing only on nuclear issues and has not allowed the missile discussion to enter.
