Afghanistan’s child malnutrition reaches worst level in 25 years

The New York Times reported that after Donald Trump returned to power and sharply reduced foreign aid to Afghanistan, the rate of child malnutrition in the country has reached an unprecedented level in the past 25 years.

The report cited several factors in exacerbating the crisis: recent earthquakes, the return of some 2.8 million Afghan refugees from neighboring countries, mainly Iran and Pakistan, and the country’s dire economic situation, exacerbated by a sudden and severe reduction in US aid.

The New York Times described the reduction in US aid as “sudden and brutal” and emphasized that the decision had a direct and catastrophic impact on the food security and health of Afghan children.

The report notes that Afghanistan was already facing a severe humanitarian crisis, but the reduction in foreign aid after Trump’s re-election has made the situation much worse.
