The emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on the situation in Iran began with a speech by Martha Ama-Akia Pobi, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacekeeping.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General emphasized that the threat of military action against Iran is further exacerbating the situation, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres believes that both addressing domestic protests and the nuclear issue should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
The Chinese representative at the meeting condemned Donald Trump’s direct threats against Iran and said that America’s behavior promotes the law of the jungle.
He added that military intervention would worsen the situation. Regional countries are concerned about increasing tensions, and the international community must stand on the right side of history.
The Russian representative also stated that the United States is fueling excitement and obsession about Iran and is trying to exploit the situation to overthrow the country’s regime.
He said that the protests in Iran have subsided and the situation has returned to normal, but that American rhetoric is irresponsible.
Russia condemned any US attempt to waste the Security Council’s time and any foreign intervention or threat of use of force against Iran.
The US representative, in turn, claimed that what is happening in Iran affects international peace and security.
He said that the Iranian regime has cut off the internet, thousands of people have been killed, spends billions of dollars to support terrorism while the people need food and medicine, and has violated human rights since the first days of coming to power.
The US representative also accused Iran of supporting Hamas and regional instability, adding that the Iranian regime is weaker today than ever and that President Trump has announced that all options are on the table to stop the killing in Iran.
In response, the Iranian representative strongly criticized the participation of individuals brought by the United States as witnesses, saying that they do not represent Iranian society, but rather represent the political agendas of the United States and Israel.
