Explosions and heavy gunfire heard near Venezuela’s presidential palace
Heavy gunfire and explosions were heard around the Miraflores Palace, the seat of the Venezuelan presidency, in central Caracas on Monday night (January 5, 2026). Videos posted on social media show air defense fire and gunfire into the sky.
Venezuelan authorities said security forces had fired warning shots in response to unidentified and unauthorized drones flying over the area, but no armed clashes had occurred, and a source close to the Venezuelan government told AFP that the situation was under control.
NBC News reported, citing two American officials, that the United States is monitoring the shootings and is not involved.
The incident occurred while Venezuela is in a politically unstable situation following the US military invasion and the arrest of Nicolas Maduro, and Delcy Rodriguez has been sworn in as interim president.
