Amnesty International: Amendment 27 to Pakistan’s Constitution is a serious setback for judicial independence

Amnesty International stated that the 27th Amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan, which was passed in November 2025, is a serious setback for judicial independence, the right to a fair trial, and the rule of law.

This amendment violates international human rights principles and, by granting lifelong immunity to officials, deprives them of the possibility of accountability.

According to this amendment, General Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, will be appointed to the rank of Field Marshal for life and will be immune from prosecution.

Amnesty International has described these changes as a threat to human rights and democracy in Pakistan
