Magnitude 7.0 earthquake strikes off northeastern coast of Taiwan

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck off the northeastern coast of Taiwan, with strong tremors felt as far away as the capital Taipei, shaking buildings, AFP reported.

The earthquake caused brief power outages in some areas and minor damage, but there have been no reports of widespread destruction or casualties.

Local authorities in Taiwan warned of the possibility of strong aftershocks, saying the island remains on alert and rescue teams are on full alert.

Taiwan is often hit by severe earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific seismic belt.
