UN: Israeli army attacks UNIFIL patrols in southern Lebanon

The United Nations Information Office in Geneva announced that the Israeli army fired heavy machine guns at patrols of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force (UNIFIL) south of the Lebanese Blue Line.

In one incident, a UNIFIL patrol that was searching a security belt in the village of Bastara came under heavy fire from Israeli army positions after an improvised explosive device exploded near the area.

The shooting caused a mild brain injury, possibly a concussion, to one of the peacekeepers, although the UNIFIL vehicles were not damaged.

At the same time, another UNIFIL patrol in the village of Kafr Shuba was also subjected to heavy machine gun fire by Israeli forces.

The United Nations has condemned these actions and stressed that attacks on peacekeepers are a violation of international law, and that investigations into these incidents are ongoing.
