Former Iraqi President Barham Salih becomes UN High Commissioner for Refugees

The United Nations General Assembly has elected former Iraqi President Barham Salih as the new United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

According to reports, Barham Saleh will succeed Filippo Grandi and will begin his five-year term of office on January 1, 2026.

Iraqi Kurdish politician Barham Salih was previously the President of Iraq from 2018 to 2022 and has a long history in Iraqi and Kurdistan Region politics.

This appointment comes at a time when the refugee crisis in the world, especially in the Middle East, continues to be one of the greatest humanitarian challenges.
