Deadly fire in Hong Kong kills 44, critically injures 45, hundreds missing

A massive fire at the Wang Fuk Court housing estate in Tai Po, which started on the afternoon of Wednesday, November 26, 2025, was brought under control hours ago after hours of firefighting efforts.

The incident, the deadliest residential fire in Hong Kong in decades, left at least 44 people dead and 45 injured in critical condition.

According to the Hong Kong Fire Department, the fire broke out at 2:51 p.m. and quickly spread to seven of the eight residential towers in the complex.

The unruly flames spread to the upper floors through bamboo scaffolding used for construction and renovation work, and thick smoke filled the sky.

More than 200 fire engines and 100 ambulances were dispatched to the scene, and rescue operations continued into the early hours of this morning (Thursday, November 27).

So far, 279 people have been reported missing, and the search for survivors is ongoing.
