United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the adoption of a US-proposed resolution on Gaza in the Security Council on Tuesday morning, describing it as an “important step towards consolidating the ceasefire.”
Guterres, who had repeatedly expressed concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza over the past two years, considered the resolution a step forward in reducing tensions, and in turn, strongly criticized the resolution, in the face of criticism from China and Russia.
Fu Kang, China’s permanent representative to the UN, expressed “serious” concern that the resolution did not fully take into account Palestinian sovereignty and property rights.
On the other hand, “Vasili Nebenzia, the permanent representative of Russia, explained his country’s abstention and stated that the text of the resolution contradicts the UN General Assembly’s declaration on the two-state solution.”
It is worth noting that the exact details of the resolution text have not yet been officially announced.
