Bejing condemns $3.3 billion US arms sale to Taiwan

China on Saturday Saturday strongly condemned the sale of $3.3 billion worth of US military equipment to Taiwan and called on Washington to immediately stop supporting pro-independence separatist forces in Taiwan.

Chen Binghua, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, said in a statement: “We firmly oppose the US arms sales to the Taiwan region of China. This action seriously harms China’s sovereignty and security interests and sends the wrong message to separatist forces.”

Emphasizing adherence to the one-China principle and the three joint statements of the two countries, he warned: “Taiwan independence is incompatible with peace across the Taiwan Strait.”

The reaction came after the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced on Thursday that the State Department had approved the sale of spare parts for F-16 fighter jets, C-130 fighter jets, indigenous Chinook fighters and support services to Taiwan.
