Russia’s biggest attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure targets nuclear power stations

In its most extensive attack on Ukraine’s energy grid, Russia fired more than 450 drones and 45 missiles at the country’s power facilities, including substations associated with the two nuclear power plants, Khmelnytskyi and Rivne.

According to Ukrainian officials, the overnight attacks killed at least seven people and cut off electricity and water to thousands of people in various areas.

“Russia once again targeted power substations feeding nuclear power plants, which were not accidental, but were completely planned and deliberately endanger the nuclear security of Europe,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha wrote in a post on the X social network.

In response, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that the targets of the attacks were Ukrainian weapons production facilities and energy infrastructure, and that the operation was a response to Kiev’s recent attacks on Russian territory.

It is worth noting that in recent weeks, the two sides have repeatedly bombed each other’s energy facilities with drones and missiles.
