Body of highest-ranking captured Israeli commander returned to Tel Aviv
The Israeli army announced that it has received the body of Assaf Hamami, the regime’s highest-ranking military officer who was captured by Palestinian resistance groups.
According to an Israeli army statement, this body, along with the bodies of two other prisoners, Omar Notora and Oz Daniel, were received from Gaza through the Red Cross, and their identities have been confirmed by forensic experts.
The move is part of a body exchange agreement under the current ceasefire, under which Hamas is obligated to return 28 captured bodies.
The Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, captured Assaf Hammami during the Battle of Al-Aqsa Storm on October 7, 2023.
Qassam had previously announced that Hamami had been injured while in captivity, but his exact fate was not yet known.
Hamas confirmed in a statement that the bodies were recovered from a tunnel east of Khan Younis in southern Gaza.
This exchange reduces the number of captive bodies remaining in Gaza to eight.
