Chemical accident at German factory produces toxic orange cloud, injuring four
Following a chemical reaction in a 6,000-liter nitric acid tank at the Schnar Oberflachentechnik galvanizing plant in the Bavarian town of Mainz, toxic gases leaked and an orange cloud appeared in the sky, leading to the declaration of a state of emergency and minor injuries to four people.
According to TASS and Reuters, the incident occurred on Monday (October 7, 2025) at around 7:00 a.m. when a piece of metal accidentally fell into a nitric acid tank, causing a violent chemical reaction.
This reaction produced toxic gases, such as nitrogen oxides, which escaped from the factory’s chimney, sending a thick orange cloud high into the air.
Local officials initially described the cloud as yellow, but images show it to be a striking orange color.
