The United Nations Security Council on Friday (September 19, 2025) rejected a draft resolution calling for the permanent lifting of UN sanctions against Iran based on the nuclear deal (JCPOA) and Resolution 2231.
In the vote, Russia, China, Pakistan, and Algeria voted in favor of the draft, while nine Security Council members, including Britain, France, the United States, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia, opposed it, and Guyana and South Korea abstained.
This vote took place while the E3, Britain, France, and Germany have activated the “snapback” process since August 28, 2025, accusing Iran of not complying with its JCPOA nuclear commitments.
Without the adoption of a new resolution, UN sanctions will automatically be reinstated on September 28, 2025.
Iran and the three European countries now have 8 days to reach an agreement on a delay in the implementation of sanctions and prevent their full return.
