Nepal’s president dissolves parliament, sets elections for March 5
Nepal’s President Ram Chandra Paudel dissolved the country’s parliament on Friday and set new elections for March 5, 2026.
The decision was made on the advice of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Sushila Karki, who has been appointed as interim Prime Minister.
Karki, who is the first woman to head the government of Nepal, was sworn in as the head of the interim cabinet at the presidential palace.
The changes came after widespread and violent protests by Generation 2 youth that began last week over issues of corruption, a temporary ban on social media, and economic grievances.
Tens of thousands of protesters set fire to parliament, the presidential residence and businesses, killing at least dozens.
Former Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli resigned on Tuesday following the unrest and fled his official residence.
The Nepalese army took control of the capital, and intensive negotiations began between the army chief, President Ashok Raj Sigdel, and representatives of the protesters to form an interim government.
