Kunar earthquake death toll rises to 812, over 2,800 injured
The death toll from last night’s deadly earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has risen to 812, with 2,817 injured, Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, told a news conference in Kabul on Monday.
He added that of this number, 800 people lost their lives in Kunar province and 12 in Nangarhar province.
Also, 2,500 people were injured in Kunar, 255 in Nangarhar, 58 in Laghman, and 4 in Nuristan.
Mujahid stressed that relief and rescue operations are continuing and that there is a possibility of increased casualties as many people are still trapped under the rubble.
According to reports, this earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale occurred in the districts of Nur-Gol, Suki, Tapur-Manogi, and Chapa Dara in Kunar province, causing extensive damage.
Also, five houses in the Abshar district of Panjshir province were destroyed by this earthquake.
Mujahid appealed for urgent assistance from the international community, saying that local resources were insufficient to respond to the disaster.
