In a move that could mark a new chapter in US relations with the Middle East, US President Donald Trump has issued executive orders to lift widespread sanctions against Syria.
The decision, implemented by the US Treasury Department, removes Syria from the sanctions list set out in federal law and paves the way for economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.
The Syrian interim government’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the move in an official statement, describing it as a positive step to alleviate the suffering of citizens and open new horizons of cooperation.
According to official reports, this lifting of sanctions is part of Trump’s policies for reconstruction after the era of Bashar al-Assad and includes efforts by the US Congress to end the Caesar Act sanctions by the end of 2025.
Trump, who announced the news at the White House, stated: “Syria is an opportunity for lasting peace in the region.”
By lifting sanctions, we allow the Syrian people to rebuild their economy and move toward stability.
