Russia’s Shakhtinsk oil refinery on fire for three days after Ukrainian drone attack

Massive fires at Russia’s Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery, one of the country’s key facilities in the south of the country and close to the Ukrainian border, have entered their third day and are still burning.

A Ukrainian drone strike earlier this week sparked the blaze, and despite the efforts of firefighters, it has yet to be fully contained.

Russian officials said Ukraine launched a massive drone attack on Russian territory on Sunday, leading to a severe reduction in the capacity of a reactor at one of Russia’s largest nuclear power plants and a massive fire at the main fuel export terminal in Ust-Luga.

Meanwhile, officials at the Kursk nuclear power plant – located 60 kilometers from the Ukrainian border – reported that air defenses shot down a drone that exploded near the plant just after midnight.

The explosion damaged an auxiliary transformer and reduced the operating capacity of reactor number 3 by 50%.
