US allies cancel purchase of F-35 fighter jets
US allies are reconsidering their purchase of F-35 fighter jets due to heavy tariffs and financial demands from President Donald Trump, a blow to one of his favorite projects.
Spain has canceled a multi-billion dollar purchase of F-35 stealth jets following a dispute with Washington over NATO’s new target of allocating 5 percent of GDP to defense spending.
Switzerland, under widespread political pressure due to a 39% US tariff on its exports, is also considering canceling the purchase of 36 F-35s.
India has also suspended purchases of American combat vehicles and anti-tank missiles by up to 50% due to increased US tariffs on its goods.
These actions, which have occurred in the last two weeks, reflect the consequences of Trump’s economic policies in US allied capitals, which have forced governments to reconsider defense relations with this country.
