Thomas Barak, the US special envoy for Syria, called the Lebanese government’s decision to disarm Hezbollah by the end of 2025 “historic” and welcomed it.
The decision, which was made at a Lebanese cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Najib Mikati, obliges the Lebanese army to develop a plan to limit weapons to government forces by the end of this year.
In a post on the X social network, Barak described this action as a step towards implementing the November 2024 ceasefire agreement and realizing the slogan of one nation, one army in Lebanon.
However, Hezbollah described this decision as a great sin and announced that it would consider it a non-existent decision.
Hezbollah and its main ally, the Amal Movement, insist that any negotiations on disarmament must begin after Israel stops its attacks and withdraws its forces from five border points in southern Lebanon.
This decision was made while Israel continues its attacks in southern Lebanon.
