UN Conference on Landlocked Countries Opens in Turkmenistan

The Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC3) began on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, in the city of Avza, Turkmenistan, and will continue until August 8.

At the opening ceremony of the meeting, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that these countries, including Afghanistan, are unfairly affected by the consequences of climate change and the global economic system, despite having only 7 percent of the world’s population.

Guterres stressed that geography should not determine destiny and called for international support to improve these countries’ access to global markets, transport infrastructure and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

The conference, attended by leaders including Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, focuses on the development of international transport corridors and the exploitation of the potential of the Middle Corridor.
